Levenworth to Watervile, 44 miles

The weather was wonderful again today. Ken said that it is better than any other trip. When we left Levenworth it was actually a little cool and there were brief showers.

We all had breakfast downstairs provided by Ann's Motel B/B. Many in the group rode out together out of Waterville. There were many places to stop and take pictures along the way. We followed Route 2 along a the Wanatchee river toward Cashmere.

When we reached Cashmere we took a detour into town and drove around some side streets. A few people went to see if they could get a tour of the Applets factory.

Ian, Troy and I continued on Route downhill to the norther part of Wanatchee. Here we crossed the Columbia River and then headed north with the Columbia River on our left. There were many fruit stands along the way and when we say Ken W. and Nancy at one of them we stopped in too.

After about 1/2 hours we headed north to our snack/lunch stop in Orondo. While there it started to get cloudy and windy. I took off knowing the Pine Canyon is ahead. As I started up on Pine Canyon it started sprinkling. Also there was a strong headwind. But once in the heart of Pine Canyon the rain stopped and it seemed like I had a tail wind. Although the grade was about 6 % it seemed easy going up since it was cool.

When I reached the church in Waterville I put up the clothes line and then had some food brought to the church by a church member.

We were told to take showers at the local pool so Troy and I headed up there first. Later when we saw Tom and Ian we walked over to the local pup and had a beer.

A number of church members brought dishes for dinner and we all talked with them. I was able to get a small room in the church for myself this evening.

We had a tailwind and a downward slop all the way to Wanatchee, about 17 miles. Couldn't get much better than that.

Everyone was commenting about the get tailwind. Riding was very easy.

When we got to Wanatchee we turned north and followed the Columbia River. The weird thing was that we then got a tail wind north again.

This area has a lot of orchards for cherries, nectarines, peaches, and other fruits. Ian, Troy, Tom, and I caught up with Nancy and Ken at a fruit stand and hung out there for a while.

Our lunch stop today was in Orlando. I stayed there briefly and then headed up Pine Canyon. This is a 7 mile climb out of the Columbia Gorge. As I started climbing it sprinkled briefly and was cool (60 degrees). I rode this section on my own. Again we had a tailwind and the climb was long but easy.

Arrived in Watherville about 1:30 and went to the local pool. Afterwards Ken, Tom, Ian, and Troy went to a saloon and had a beer.
